Titles?

What's up with the titles under people's nics? The default appears to be "stranger" but why do some have a title like "vertex"?

The default is null, before the proper ranks have been coded in people were assigned the rank of a "stranger" and the system thought the admins intended those ranks to stay like that forever. Now those who joined up early have the title stranger while the newbies go hrough a whole lot of ranks.

Actually, I've been thinking about this, and I have an idea I'm going to run past Ro and Kub tonight.

A while back, on the old boards, we used to have incremental titles just as we do here on the new one. It was generally agreed that this was a bad idea, encouraged spamming and put a rift between new guys and old guys that had nothing to do with their experience and everything to do with how much they liked to post. So we removed it. No one had a big problem with it, you could still see how many posts you had, you just had a default title or a custom one.

So I'm going to propose the same thing here. Everyone defaults to "Polycounter", no increase in ranks, and you earn any custom titles you may want (Not sure on how you'd earn them just yet).

I just have to wait to get home to run this by R13...

Anyway, I like Harl's idea. Custom titles are the bestest.

I think we should have many more contests. Like a weekly low poly contest, winner decided by community votes. The number of wins could determine your title.
Things like Tutorials for the community could also count towards one's title. It would basically be a measurement of how involved you are with the community, not how much free time/inclination you have to post.

Yeah Frosty it is, though whether I'll ever finish it now is up for debate. I think I'd rather start over and do it better next time... I'm probably far to lazy for that though /images/graemlins/wink.gif

I like the idea of 'polycounter' for the file and rank, whereas those who earn the extra by helping out in the forums or reviewing models get the bonus of a custom title.
