honestly, I am happy he sculpted them rather modestly, rather than making them huge knockers, it works better I think, it's weirder to see them at proper proportions to his frame rather than giant.

Hey adam, really impressive sculpt, but i personally think it's ended up very confusing to look at. Every wrinkle and crease is the same depth, and it ends up looking really busy and overworked. I think it would be a lot more visually effective if you toned down a lot of the secondary creases, and stuck to a few distinct forms as focal points.
Here's a really messy paintover, to show what i mean: http://i30.tinypic.com/303aj4g.jpg

SupRore: Thanks for the paintover and yeap it's definitely overworked. It was partly because it was a speed model so I felt a bit more willing to get loose with my style and see where it would take me, but in the end I agree a lot of it is just visual clutter that doesn't serve to enhance the design. I really appreciate the criticism though because sometimes it's hard for me to tell whether or not I'm overdoing it.

Ruz don't you feel like sculpting big fat assault boots like this and yours is like the coolest thing to do in a scultping app ? Maybe it's because of that screenshot of a white trainer that was posted just before Mudbox got released and also because of the crazy Rainbow Six all-zbrush gear stuf that Sebcesoir did... Don't know why, but it's always fun to do somehow.
Anyways, the basemeshes :
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v242/pior_ubb/pior_cop_wip_003_basemesh.png
Very simple geo and really just a a few minutes spent on each. I gave the kneepad some thickness before the sculpting pass using a the shell modifier along a spline - that way the border is nice and locked before sculpting, allowing me to focus more on surface details later without the need to worry about annoying and wobbly shape edges.

http://img253.imageshack.us/img253/1253/rpd0006td2.jpg
Hehe as a matter of fact Sama the 5-sided gons are no problem at all since this is just a basemesh for sculpting!
The final ingame mesh will be completely different since retopologized (!) according to the highpoly shapes. I find it faster to just mass out bold shapes for the basemeshes rather than spending time to make them quadperfect since it will all be sculpted anyways... Also non-quads topology is quite valid as long as it's not star shaped intersections. For instance if I went all quadastic where the 5-sided polys are, I would get too much density because of the added loops : the horizontal 'missing loop' from the ankle to the shoe tip is thus intentional...

So this is my first time posting, but I have been a long time fan of the forum. I finally mustered up enough courage to show some of the stuff I have been working on.
I heard about the upcoming Dominance War nad have been counting the days until I can start. To pass the time I figured I would do a warm up. here's what came out:
http://www.rapture-art.com/other_forum_pics/dead_eye001.jpg
It still has the high-res maps on it -- going to re-arrange UV's and down-res once the whole thing is finished. Mouth can open and is designed to be highly animatable. Body & effects to come /images/graemlins/smile.gif
pior, that's a really cool and intricate boot you've got going. Impressive sculpting. It makes the whole high polygon thing more fun and intuitive, don't you agree? Of coures, it has its limitations, but those are easily bypassed by some old-fashioned SubD work /images/graemlins/smile.gif
Some of my own sculpting that I'm working on at the moment. All ZBrush, from some simple mesh. Finishing up the head, adding some (I guess) bionic tech. Not satisfied with the eye piece shape and details, so that is being changed right now:
http://www.davidostman.se/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/01/armour-wip-005.jpg

I figured I'd combine a few bullpup weapons into 1 to get something hopefully cool and unique looking... unlike some of the weapons out there now. It started as a polish sniper rifle code named "Alex" and I grabbed the barrel shroud, barrel and trigger group off my g36c model. Just wondering if it looks like a design you would actually expect to see in life?
here's a low res wire of it so far... it's messy... I'll get to cleaning it later.. if that.. I just wanted to design it in 3d to get a feel for the silhouette ... easier than drawing lines on paper :P

I normally do the base sculpt in zbrush and add the details in pshop, but then you are relying on a perfect uv map for your base which is quite time consuming.

Hawken - don't change the name of the big ass burger - that is what makes it work. It is realistic and funny that a restaurant chain calls a pathetic burger "big ass"

If you bevel everything at once, it makes it harder to modify things farther along the way since the base geometry gets rounded as well - for rounded edges I never round the actual geometry but just let the subdivision algorithm do it's trick.
on more complex meshes, I find a lot of areas which require manual cutting and editing - if I had the actual base geometry for the edges rounded I'd never have the power to make adjustments.
Also, if you extrude everything (not bevel) at once you obviously won't get the same results.
There is no rule to it, do what works best for you, and if you find a more efficient method, do gimme a buzz - I'm always eager to learn and improve my technique /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Here's something I started mostly just to test a base mesh I've been working on and off on. It currently weighs in at 950k polys, and while as I could probably reduce that via local sub division I'm keeping away from that in case I need to bring it into zbrush later. The legs + lower waist are going to be completely covered once I get to cloth and such, so I'm not putting much effort into them.
http://www.polyhertz3d.com/meat_tank/meat_tank4.jpghttp://www.polyhertz3d.com/meat_tank/meat_tank5.jpghttp://www.polyhertz3d.com/meat_tank/meat_tank01.jpg

QFT. I think if someone other than a mod or a long term member chose DOOM3 characters they would have had their thread locked. It's less next gen than heihachi is third person. I think they should all be allowed.

Mad with power is the easy way of saying absolutely doesn't know how to define a parameter and or have an understanding of a camera's position within a set or environment. Tekken being on the PS3 kinda solidifies it as a next gen candidate and the camera being from the vantage point of a 3rd person observor (i.e. the damn player(s)) kinda puts the camera in the realm there of. Another case of bad judgement in closing those threads and therefore trying to nulify solid work that falls within the specs of the challenge...even if ever so greatly vague. Lame.

thats looks great. I promise we'll do a fighting game comp again soon. fps / 3rd person perspective really meant shooter/adventure games (most people got it by the examples and "fps" (first person shooter), weapon allocation), sorry if that wasn't clear enough as your model is truely great - always a hazard with running these challenges.

"Third person computer games cover games that are played from a third person's point of view. The majority of third person games have a the view slightly above and behind the main character, but can also include more 2D graphic adventure games. The third person games category is broken down in alphabetical order and but genre or theme. Also included are reviews and top picks."
From the site you posted above. Imo it confirms that fighting games is indeed a third person game?

more fun maya scuplting.
NO they arent 100% dental accurate, and a number of them are cloned (only 5 separate tooth models), but this is headed for a toon rendered production for a buddy of mine, and I doubt the audience will notice.
EDIT: and what part of 1st or third person action-adventure shooter game was so hard to understand?
Fighting is a genre separate from action-adventure.

Except it didnt say that in the initial brief, its changed now. It said a character from any next gen FPS/3rd person game for example gears of war etc. Now its edited to be alot more specific. Anyway there is a separate thread for this in general.

Good start, though the seam of the maps in the middle of the models is pretty visible. Try to remove it and add some color variation to the whole character!

I'm working on a realistic interpretation of the Scout in TF2. I was going for the body of a lean special ops soldier. The design right now is a bit plain versus the TF2 one but I plan on giving a very quirky and unconventional outfit that will hopefully distinguish him from a vanilla military dude.

Very cool but the face looks old and because of that he seems not very fast. It wouldnt really fit to your style to make the skin smoother but i would reduce the skin hanging above his eyes and his head/forehead less big.
@ ggmd
Great environment work.

Nice but the skull is missing something /images/graemlins/wink.gif

Thanks Davision. I wanted to make him a bit more mature looking, but I agree he was too old for the character I was trying to portray. I've dialed back his age a bit and did some early work on the outfit.

You are totally right, unfortunately it's a little bit
late for me to make changes /images/graemlins/frown.gif
Seems the ears normaly come out from the side of the head

Intergalactic swashbuckling adventurer named John Cosmos. He needs a head. This isn't the low poly, it's the base for sculpting, blocking in shapes and a few basic colours. Started out using Arsh's baseman, as you can see.
Left arm is robotic.

Well.. I started doing a sculpt of a lich's hood using my skull as the head and it kinda got out of control and my creativity took over and voila... the bizzare hood. Going to keep working on it and caress the folds, and ya he does still need a body but i'm having a blast with it so far. I'll post updates as they're available /images/graemlins/smile.gif
Cheers.

ggmd, I'm in love with that building man. It looks very Assassin's Creed and thats been my game of choice these days so I'm excited to see where you're going with that. I love the detail work on the mesh. I'd kill to know a bit about your workflow and to peep some of those textures. Amazing stuff.
