that's got some really nice design deibling! I think your colours are a bit strong and clashing, like a lot of the image is competing for your attention. Itd be nice to figure our your focal points and adjust the colours and contrast to draw the viewer's attention.

Obviously not done, I seek harsh criticism

rooster
12-10-2007, 05:44 PM
jester, I think you're making the classic early mistake of painting things lighter as they bulge out towards the viewer. So that means, youve painted it as if the light is coming directly from the viewer which is unusual- normally the light source is from above.

think again about an imaginary light coming from above your character, and notice things such as the underside of the arm should be darker than the top. As an excercise, imagine the light and paint each material in 3 pure colours: one for where the light directly hits the surface, one for where the surface is 90 degrees to the light, and one for where the surface is facing away from the light

I think if you try this you'll notice a distinct improvement in the impression of 3d space you're trying to create

I see what you mean Rooster, I started with the idea of light coming from the high right side. But looking at it again, there are parts I've plum forgotten. The monster/human skin is were I started, It needs reworking I suppose.

A side note, does the cloak look at least cloth like? What about the helmet does it a appear metallic?

Guess it's about time I posted something a little more serious. Modelled him awhile ago, still working on the tex, I think the normal is done (but not used in this shot).

Spent the last couple days riggin and did a test pose. I'm not gonna show the wires 'cause it's ugly. I still haven't commited ,myself to any certain style of character modelling, they all start and end differently. I've only done about 10 Ai and they are all fairly different.

This guys started by tracing a gargoyle head in photoshop and exporting the .ai file, then extruding it. Can't remember but I think the body was mostly done by extruding a cube. The wings were a spline.

Been in the mood to texture, the past few days. Japhir: Your animations make ie crawl to a halt in the library, heh. When things start chugging along, I know your post is coming. The bears ears look pretty square, but it's hard to tell. With so many polygons, couldn't you round out the top some? Might be the angle, though. Waste your kb's on some more angles, you dutchy!

rooster, really interesting and powerful-looking design. I love how the clip works. I might have to, um, borrow that sometime..

Working on a new character. Not quite sure where to go with him from here, I don't want to risk overdoing him. Started from a heavily modified version of Arshlevon's baseman (such as having divided him into three parts, and cavities for mouth and eyes). Going to add some hair to him next as soon as I've sketched something that looks good.

A little more progress. But I've been looking at the characters from Final Fantasy IV for the DS and there are some serious proportion changes between the two games. I'll keep going on in this direction though, and finish her up, and then decide if I want to go with the more realistic IV style for the model as opposed to III's pear-bodies.

Not a bad start Jaco.

Suggestions:
- Don't cheese out and cover up hands if you have trouble drawing them. Take a few days and study hands, draw hands and soak yourself in a sea of hand reference.
- The green glow would light the hands and cast green light on the character.
- Try not to draw shadows in black, but a darker shade of the base color.
- Try not to outline your character in shadow when they are on a light background. Normally you want some rim lighting to lightly outline them. Read up on 3 point lighting and really try to work in some kind of lighting set up in your head while you're blocking things out.

Slainean, Marlon Brando?

and Ged, I've seen trash bins that had, what looked like, concrete panels on the sides of it, it looks good to me.

Just started sculpting a Peruvian head based on those funky skulls they found that had the elongated craniums...got a little carried away with it.

Not quite. He definitely has the Gigolo Joe hairline though. I think my hint was way too vague (The Godfather).

Bingo. /images/graemlins/cool.gif I'm going for middle-age, not yet bloated Brando. I think I'll make a low-poly bust once I'm done sculpting.

Scoob: those are some low kneepads, man. Either they're not on the knee, or the knees are just too low. It's also all a bit 'inflated'-looking (reminds me of pillowshading in drawing), but since you said 'babysteps', I take it you're not entirely finished with it anyway.

Finally got my tablet etc plugged in at home so got some time to play around with him some more, i figured it was kinda wierd that he had so thick clothes on most of his body yet none at all on his forearms. Added some kind of shirt but im really not sure that i like the result. Also changed a bunch of other things.

@defeat: it's simply the bronze shader by ralf stumpf with some changes i made, i didn't like the heavy cavity masking, because it's giving the sculpt a pretty dirty look.
And i changed the intensity to achieve a brighter look on subtools i don't have activated, so i activate a small invisible piece inside the body and the rest is inactive.

achmedthesnake: nice work so far, but i'd try to break the symmetry a bit more if possible /images/graemlins/smile.gif

banana, isnt that too much uv space for an eye?

@ SEKNeox: thats looking absolutely brilliant! though i must say, the hair makes it look like a sculpt.. like an actual iron/bronze sculpt or something

@Renaud Galand: wow thats amazing! stitches and scars [troughs in the skin] are really well done [as is the rest of it, but those things are amazing!]

he's not going to have alpha mapped hairs, all polygons so at least i'm not going to have any problems with alphasorting.

Hi everyone new poster here. Been lurking this forum for a while for inspiration. I have a bad habit of putting my work out online so I thought this thread would be a nice place for getting some quick comments and feedback.

Anyways, I'm working on a set of characters right now based on demons from various literature. First one is Beelzebub, Lord of the Flies.

that kicks ass! The only issue I have is with the hands. They just seem too girthy and fight the design a bit. My suggestion would to make the hands and fingers long and sinewy

did a quick normalmaptest, no final uv layout, just a quick test if it works or not

http://polyphobia.de/nonpublic/airborn/boy_05.jpg

and one question for the unreal pros, would it be better to have the head seperate (also extra texture sheet) when i want to switch the ingame and sequence mesh? normally he's shown like 90% from behind so i think i don't need so much polygons in his face. but maybe th polycount doesn't matter that much, heard that u3 can handle tons of polygons and has only problems with texturepages, so having him all on one page would be better? i normally prefer having the head on an extra texturesheet, it's better to work with, at least for me ...
