Astrofra, nah, just diffuse, specular and bump.
I don't think we're really using any enviroments other than water for the mod, I'm also gonna dirty it up a bit still so I don't think it will end up shiny enough to reflect the enviroment much.
8FtSpider, the hair is great. Doesn't look like alpha mapped hair, looks natural.

http://johny.johnyontehspot.com/basemesh.jpg
Nice mesh Johny! The ears might give you some problems though. That bit at the front of the ear stands out too much, it's also very dense compared to the rest of the mesh. When you subdivide it it's going to look like the ear is stuck on to the head, and not part of it.

mikebart- the bricks look pretty good with the normal maps, but have you ever thought about using tiling textures? You'd easily be able to get away with a 512 prick pattern, and a 512 with the specialty brick patterns tiling horizontally. Just seems like a really big waste at the level of detail you've got so far.
sama.van- Looks real slick, so far. Although the skin tone on her body seems to get lighter the further down you go.

good start pseudo!
Wow, some awesome stuff popping up in here over the last few days!
Tennis: That stuff always amazes me, really sharp and lovely colours. Good job!
RobG: Nice sprite too, more anims will be fun! /images/graemlins/smile.gif
Commander_Keen: Very cool, I'm itching to try ZB3 for this sort of stuff, although I agree with what Xenobond said, those "buffers" at each end are looking a bit blobby. Nice concrete damage though, and you're definitely hitting the right style.
Mikebart: More nice stuff as usual, although I think Xenobond is right about your use of textures. If you wanna keep the nice edges that catch the highlights on corners, you could maybe make a thin, modular "corner piece" texture, which matches up with either side of a 512x512 tiling brick texture, and has normals that work around a 90 degree lowpoly angle. That could be 128x512 or 256x512 if necessary, and would probably mean you could keep that highpoly look without spending so much space on unique textures.
Sama.van: Very interesting texture, cool work so far /images/graemlins/smile.gif
Pseudo: Great start, I like the eyes, although they seem a tad close together to me?
Inspiring stuff in here...
mikebart
06-15-2007, 05:09 AM
@Mop, Xenobond; Thanks, I can see what you mean about the corner Mop, making a thin sliver of a normal map would definitly save some texture space but using a 512x512 tiling brick texture would be useless for what im trying to do here, ill post it up properly soon, its a bit experimental as in its something I havent done before but basicly im creating a set of modular peices which ill be able to build a farily large variaty of brick structure's including render, trims, ornaments and damaged bits all on the same 2048x2048 texture map, it wont be super high rez but it will have alot of content.
these are basicly all the models that the building consists of at the moment and by doing it this way Im able to build quite quickly.

Neo_God: Heh, that's cool... although I'd have to say that the flesh shadows (especially at the top of the image) are looking too desaturated and grey, IMHO it'd really improve it if you kept the same values, but saturated them more and pushed the hue towards red. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v305/Neo_God/upskirt2.jpg
I still kept them a pinch desaturated though, because this is what the project calls for. But the reds definitely helped soften up the flesh. Though I also upped the saturation on everything to make it pop more, and I added palm trees.
Haha, Per, I don't know how original this is, because I think Japanese guys have been drawing this sort of stuff for years, haha.

naw not upskirts neo, I have gigs of that stuff /images/graemlins/wink.gif I mean the whole style of presentation you got going there, it's fresh.
I know I learned most of what I know about form and color doing vector and abstract 2d work. Dunno how people think to cope learning that stuff while also worrying about polylimits and shaders and all junk.
I think you can still desaturate the torso like you did in the first version, but then desaturate the background too, as it's deeper in than her shoulderblades. That's why it looked off to me and the MoP.
btw don't trust MoP, bin any flyers he hands you and don't give him your phone number. I'm talking from experience here.

The one thing I'm going to say that I had said with your buildings, too, is to avoid using layer style beveling with white and black - use softlight, screen, and multiply blending modes for the highlights and shadows, and use color tints, not pure black and white. You'll get much better bevels.

Got a chance to learn the Unreal engine at school last quarter. Had to make a nazi occupied hallway and room (based off concept art that was provided). It's a cliche idea I know, but it was still a lot of fun to make.
You can actually run through the fireplace, go up an elevator and shoot people through hitler's portrait. /images/graemlins/laugh.gif Little secret I added, shhhh don't tell anybody.

I agree with merecraft. I think there are WAY too many scratches, especially on the bottom shelf and the underneaths. I'm assuming the same texture is being reused from the top, but I would make a different texture for the bottom shelf.

So I just finished my summer term, and freshman/foundation year of art school, so next fall I get to go onto my major (Sculpture). Anyway, here's one of my pieces from my 3d class. We originally started with a fruit or vegetable, and then had to do stuff to it (like abstract it or exaggerate it or derive something from it's shape). I picked a pear and noticed it had a butt shape to it so I took it to the next level.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v305/Neo_God/PearLady.jpg
It's carved from foam, which was then covered in several coats of primer and sanded to a smooth finish, then I airbrushed and hand painted the texture on, finally coated with a clear polyurethane.
There's another piece from that class which was a kinetic sculpture made entirely out of basswood, but my teacher has yet to email me the photos of it.
hmm, already been there

Neo_God that pear sculpture is excellent, I love how feminine you've managed to make it and yet still appear very fruity. The cross section is an excellent touch and the texture is very well painted...I love airbrush painting.
My only critique would be perhaps the polyurethane coating added too much gloss to the surface, I think using airbrush matte coat paint would have toned it down a little bit, besides that it's wonderful. Maybe it's just the flash of the camera =)
Here is a piece I did for my sculpture final at the Art Institute

Cool character kicker. I think he needs a neck, it looks like the head is connected to chest. Im curious how you will make the fluffy hair, i expect you will go low poly with the character? I will try to make such fluffy hair for my squirrel in high poly.
Neo_God: Heh, that's awesome. Really good job on capturing the pear flesh colours and variation, although as someone else pointed out it does look a tad shiny. I really like it though /images/graemlins/smile.gif
IronHawk: Could do with some more colour variation i think, some little stains from rain and where dirt got pushed up against the bottom etc. Not bad so far though.

Slipstream: Nice stuff. Love that first girl's form from the side. Couple things...
The vest is looking a little too form-fitting around the chest. It looks like a fairly heavy material, so I don't think you'd need to make the shadows that harsh.
The folds on the jeans could use some work. Grab some (http://www.jeanstore.co.uk/ecomm/graphics/PR_1923_LG.jpg) reference (http://www.designsbystephene.com/prod_images_large/BasFlareStrectchHoney2.jpg) images (http://www.mary-kateandashleystyle.com/images/Genetic%20Denim%20Recessive%20Flare%20jeans%20in%2 0Carbon.jpg) and work from that. For instance, the knees look like the jeans are tacked into her skin. The middle of the pelvis is being pushed back because there are highlights all around it (in the pockets and that fold on the crotch).
The second girl looks cool too, what's she for?

That head you made has lots of problems, heaped on the fact that you 'cheated' by using Facegen. I use Facegen often for my base meshes, but when it looks like a Facegen head you've failed (that lameass texture too). It would be like taking a screenshot of the Oblivion character creation screen and saying I modeled this!
No one would have bashed you for it, except its so blatantly a Facegen head that was poorly edited, and you made a really lame 300 joke,
killingpeople
07-05-2007, 12:08 PM
shagspear, i am not familiar with facegen and did not know you had used it as a crutch.
i'm sure using facegen was practical for helping you familiarize yourself with the process.
i would teasingly go as far as agreeing with the sentiments and say, yeah! that is LAME. /images/graemlins/tongue.gif i repsect conte as an artist of this community and i'd say he's just razzing you by speaking his mind. i see that as a good thing.
you need to grow some thicker skin and relax son. i don't like the implication that my comment justifies your 'correctness' in dissing on ashkat. also consider, i do believe, english is not his first language.
the head you've created from the sphere shows a large difference in abilities. i did think the facegen head did turn out pretty cool, and that warrants something.
