Really? Well, my timestamp on the model only goes back as far as 2002, so eh.

East, look on legs, i am adding loops only there, where could be details.

Not sure I understand, but.. I'm just saying when making a mesh for ZBrush/Mudbox it's good practice to have square polygons everywhere. You never know when you want to start adding some finer surface texture into the mesh.

[/ QUOTE ]
Not to diss your teacher, but that concept has way to little detail to base a highpoly model on. So you really need to take your artistic freedom and change that.
For example those big ass screws on the scope: looks nice on such a small concept picture but really bad and undetailed on the actual model.
Heyo Nate, a good start for a hipoly, but there's a few things concerning both A, the concept, and B, your execution.
The concept is missing some things that a regular ol' assault rifle would always have. First thing I noticed was that there's no bolt for the ejection port. Second, the barrel doesn't seem to line up properly with the frame of the weapon. On the two sections of the gun, with the little break in between, there's no barrel running through, which would be impossible. The barrel runs from very close to where the magazine starts, to wherever it ends, so make sure the frame accomodates for that. The stock looks very uncomfortable. |: (
On your model... The foregrip looks like a ribbed dildo. : ( We're in the business of killing, not punishing (or pleasuring) our enemies' various orifices, Nate. (For shame!) Just flatten out that bottom, and make sure the waves on the grip are made for a human hand. Your attachment system for the top of the gun's frame is looking a little weird too, though the concept didn't show much. Most assault rifles have a standardized 'mounting platform', for which various kind of scopes, dooznicks and whatnots can be attached to. I'll link you up with the most popular NA model, the Picatinny Rail (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Picatinny_rail). Another problem that seems to stem from the lack of a profile concept, is how the barrel is attached to the frame of the gun. There's a different ways, but for that particular 'shape' of an assault rifle, it looks like it'd have some space to it.
http://athens.indymedia.org/local/webcast/uploads/metafiles/tavor.jpg
See the opening on the front of the gun? For a large frame like your gun, for it to be a solid volume would place far too much weight at the end of the firearm, thus making it a little unwieldy, on the other hand, he seems to have drawn in perforations for exhaust, so I'm a little weirded out by what's going on in the concept. Like JK said, you may want to take some artistic license in making it seem a little more functional.

gir:
tip: If you're going to try and edge extrusion method, block out most of the character first. Don't be worried if you can't connect an edge to somewhere else on the geometry right away.
I edge extrude 99% of the time and almost always, as I'm modeling, I have holes in my geometry.
Get the figure in there first. Block out his torso, parts of his arm, legs, etc. Even start thinking about his head, too.
Edge extruding isn't really efficient for high detail stuff. It's really only ideal for low-polygon work and for the blocking-in stage.

Sorry to rain on your parade but;
For a university piece I would expect much higher quality. This looks like something from the 1980's.
Get your GI on, bake it into the textures! Wheres the bells and whistles?!
Even in the 80's with limited ram, they bothered to texture things. You appear to have just slapped most things with a "half self illuminated white emulsion", even the chairs!

Ferg: watch out for those hard 90 degree changes in geometry, like the ends of the feet and the forearms, they'll give you some problems, usually adding in some chamfers there will fix that stuff up. Or you can just seperate off those polys into a different smoothing group, that will work too.

I hear ya! When I first looked at the Unreal models I thought they were okay for what seemed to be 400 tris... But as it turns out, they're well over 500. I so wanted to take out all the wasted tris to unblockify and feminize her! But, that would kind of defeat the point of retexturing a model from an old game.
The unwrapping was a nightmare as well... remind me not to touch these models again. /images/graemlins/crazy.gif

irritant one thing i see on your weapon textures is that you have eevolved very little on them , you seem to place scratching only on the edges , but putting it on each one of them wont make it credible, also , your texture lack a somesort of lightning source, , making the gun loose a bit of "volume" , play with it man , i really dig the designs of the weapons, but the textures could be improved imo /images/graemlins/wink.gif
keep it up and i posted this to help, not to bash /images/graemlins/smile.gif

a screengrab from max, I am using ben cloward's 3 lights shader but the results are kind of mediocre. I am using Max7 and it seems not to like mirrored elements on the mesh, as can be seen on one of the arms and legs ...
http://fusebrush.com/image/stroggo_7.jpg
Xnormal on the top seems to sort out the normals just fine though..
I would like to get it to work in max, for simplicities sake, but it doesnt show up very clean in viewport. I remember those neat screengrabs of Mop and Tully's critter, how did he pull it off ? any ideas ?
Edit: Well it seems i was using a very outdated version of xnormal. It's better now .. I guess i'll use it from now on.

Looking good CheeseOnToast! The dust doesn't read that well though, because of the specular , it shouldn't have any highlights. Also I don't think the skin is dark enough. If he is a slave (I assume he is because of the dust) he probably spends a lot of time in the sun, which would cause the skin to get darker.
Vitor
05-10-2007, 12:31 PM
Cheese yes the dust has some problems but folloing what jaco said of the specular it might look good then. I'd also change the specular color for a more bluish one, now looks like he gots jaundice.

Darkened the flesh, and boosted/sharpened the dust. I think it reads better now. The dust was already masked in the spec, but it was just a bit too close to the flesh tone before. The flesh spec was fine, just the diffuse needed tweaking. Cheers Jaco and Vitor.

hey vitor, i think you have a slight issue with the palms and the wrist, the way it's bent makes it seem like the hand lacks much volume. I am concerned about the size of the hands as well. Maybe you can scale them up a bit.
I also think the breasts are pushed together a bit too unnaturally, i know you intend to have a tank top, but i think laying them to the side a little bit will appear more natural.

@ Fuse
Nice work.
The red on the transition to the metal looks too blurry to me. You could try to make it more bloody scarred.
@ diffa
The shape of the eyesockets looking strange. And of course he needs to look creepy!

Highpoly done!
Still many things to fix here and there like the collar clipping through and the straps being too thick. I'll fix that straight on the normalmap and on the lowpoly model. Same thing for the fabric bags and pockets, I plan to work them straight on the texture, or using overlays from other normalmaps I already have at hand.

I used the same base as for the Greek slave I made earlier, so it shares some of the problems. Wrists and hands still need a bit of work.

pior....ARRRGH!!! man that's awesome. i am a little curious in that first shot...his bicep seems to be digging into his flesh where it meets the forearm.
cheese: lookin good mate. i still think that basemodel is a tad too thin in the hips. it's also instantly recognizeable as that older mesh. perhaps some altering would help make it it's own??? mebbers?

the textures are still very wip, and i still need to find out how to bake some shadows... anybody got a link to a simple tutorial on that?
