woa I used the ut2004 editor for the first time and I must say its awesome to be able to see the lighting right away. Imported some of my models just to test it out. As you can see, ive no idea yet how to scale models in the editor or rotate:P. Didnt have enough time, will read more about it later.
Anyways here it is:

Just starting on the armor.
No issue Dizzy, actually it was not even stylized hair but just a placeholder. I'll use some more elaborate hair in the end. I wont sculpt the hair at all actually - I don't really like the plaster look that zbrushed/mudboxed hairstrands have.
Nice pages everyone! Cool again Sama, yet there are still some wonky things on the UVs. Pretty colors tho! I'll try my hand at these later.
Update!

He doesn't look too bad for a face that still needs heavy mudboxing or zbrushing, but without wires that's not easy to say. His face could use some love, he could use some work on the chin, http://www.anatomyatlases.org/atlasofanatomy/plate17/images/17-2_static.jpg
And generally he needs a lot more definition going on everywhere. I'd suggest looking at some good anatomy reference. Goodluck!:)

Pior;
How I've said before -
I didn't understand well , I've been OFF.
Anyway this idea didn't let me sleep and this afternoon I did a quick test with PROJECTION MASTER and my DIZZYALPHAHAIR -

http://www.miseryproduction.com/divers/dizzyalphahair4a.jpg
....about 10 minutes work. I know that's not perfect but I see some possibility there.
We can use also DECO BRUSH to finish it.
------------------------------------------------------
For a game character we don't need it , is n't it ?

Your SNAKE.FR looks cool and since now I'm affraid that You will cross my idea which I'm developping since few weeks for this summer for my portfolio /images/graemlins/crazy.gif /images/graemlins/mad.gif

Doodling up an outfit for a guy I'm working on...
Japhir, speaking as someone who dresses like that regularly, the neck of the sweatshirt should be more v-shaped and about level with the clavicle, instead up under his chin. And the pant legs should be longer, clumping up around the shoes. Hope that helps. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Hey spacey it's funny that you mention that... I used pics of Kurt Russel and Tom Selleck as references but it's no doubt that Rambo was the real source of inspiration for BigBoss in Snake Eater.
Proof!
http://videodetective.com/photos/377/015835_33.jpg
Dizzy, yeah that technique works well for that one kind of specific greasy hair - but I am looking for a different style here, more loose hence not sculptable. I think It will give too much of a figurine look on Snake.
Decided to add some more accessories. Will have to test that!

Don't forget Sean Connery. He was the original reference for the older Big Boss shown in the original Metal Gear games, and several of his features show up a bit in the mgs3 version.

That, and the colours of the leaves just make it seem even dirtier. I like the face though, the rendering on there's quite lovely.
edit: i thought i should mention it's not the fact that they're black, it's just that i don't think they work well with the rest. And that's coming from a big muchastyle/jugendstil/Art Nouveau-fan, so it's not that i don't appreciate the style itself.

Been working on this picture of prime for what seems like forever. @EQ: I remember telling you years ago that the way you do the bottom of the nose and the way it connects to the upper lip is wrong... and now I will do it again /images/graemlins/tongue.gif
@Cheapy: I like how you change the geometry/UV map while painting, instead of figuring out how to make a undistorting UVmap first. Saves a lot of time I guess on areas that don't need such a carefully designed UVmap. Btw, was that done with the internal paining mode of Blender or the Verse->GIMP integration?
Concerning your workflow... I am certainly not an expert since my workflow sucks too, but you seem to do a aweful lot of "poly by poly" modeling. You workflow seems to point to "polystripes" so that is what I would try to use more often... But it certainly showed me why I love the volume based boxmodeling of Wings3D so much /images/graemlins/wink.gif

Japhir, your head/neck proportions are off. Easy mistake to make, when you're modeling with clothing like that; try to get some basic human ref and keep in mind the way the hood should sit on him. At first glance I'd say you need to bring down the shoulders and brow. Some cool cloth detail on those pants, some of that creasing looks spot on, although like a really light material. If that's denim you may want to see if you can imply a bit more bulk and weight.
Japhir
03-31-2007, 01:58 PM
thanks a lot! Those are the kind of crits I needed. I was planning on also adding a photo and overlaying it over the pants with some effects to make it less smooth but i first wanted to get the basics done.

@cheap you shouldn't do the 2d spikes on birdos back that way !
having 2 triangles/planes/faces exactly on the "mirroring axis" facing with their normals the opposit way is a bad habit ! if you combine both mirrored sides and welt/merge the verts you are going to get some pretty ugly smoothing behavior even worse if your geometry is level architecture than you can prepare yourself for some nasty collision problems aswell !

Ohsomogilicious...that kind of sounds like Ozymandias. And your little desert scene there definitely brings that poem to mind.
I met a traveler from an antique land,
Who said two vast and trunkless legs of stone,
Stand in the desert, near them on the sand,
Half-sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read,
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed.
And on the pedestal these words appear,
My name is Ozymandias, king of kings,
Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair.
Nothing beside remains, round the decay,
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare,
The lone and level sands stretch far away.
It looks very good so far. I would like to see some example of character sculpture, though. A statue missing its head, or a weathered torso.
Hehe, we studied that poem in class a few days ago.

Looks good, but I'd add some brackets to those supports. For example, the main pipe typically has a square block that the front hoop bolts to. So, there's usually a square chunk of metal on the back side that matches the one on the front.
You should also add bolts to your backboard texture to show where the two side braces are secured on the front side.

Yeah... Vahl already pointed out the bumping. The only other suggestion would be to lower the pole now. Like I mentioned earlier, the hoop bolts onto the plate on the pole. Right now, your pole meets in the middle of the backboard, yet the hoop is on the bottom. The hoop is right, but the pole isn't.
It's looking good though.

ok, this is how it looks now.
http://www.onepunchmachine.com/fa/hoop_wip6.png
Oz: I wouldn't mind seeing a version with either no normal map or a very minimal normal map. Right now the paint looks to be really thick, which doesn't happen unless there's years and years of paint layered on itself.
osman
04-07-2007, 03:52 PM
yeah it is thick, but it is for the source engine so it may not even be visible in there, so i'll have to wait and see how it looks in-game. Source always lowers the bump on normal maps (what i have experienced).
Ok started working on this, its very wip because I dont really know where to go with this. The metal holders dont really have a texture yet, its just red metal overlay atm. Will work on that when my normal is fixed.

Nice work so far. Especially the jaw.
How did you model that? Did you use box modeling or modeling from plane?
I always use plane for modeling a head (starting from the tip of the nose) but Iīm having trouble to make a good "joint" between frontal and side-view.
oh i had fun with this one, i was sitting in the backyard, and i saw birdies /images/graemlins/laugh.gif
i just had to capture one, though it took some time before i could get close to them, and everytime i took a pic, the camera said "click" and the birdies flew away :P
i did manage to capture a couple, cant wait to go to france this summer and capture alot more nature things.

I first made a strip that defined the profile view and the made the eye and mouth loops fron that. Then from the back of the head I partly modelled the neckmuscles, and from there on it all came together pretty nice.
Modelled ears and made one of those fancy turnaroundthingmajigs!

Nice Oz. I like this little series you're working on. Can we see some wires on that last one?
_Oz: I'm digging that roof. Looks nice.

The spec on that roof doesn't look right... way too much, I'd say. Assuming by the coloring and texture that its terracotta tiles? They have very very little spec on them
Jesse Moody
04-09-2007, 03:36 PM
Yeah living in Southern California I see those types of roofs all the time and they aren't that shiny. Even when wet they aren't quite that shiny. A little bit of spec but not on the whole thing.

id go so far as to say not every material needs a spec map. Why make whats not needed?
oh and go rooster go!
osman
04-09-2007, 04:06 PM
yeah i changed the spec and the diffuse, the diffuse is more desaturated and brown now, the spec still needs to be lowered then, cant get to my computer,i'll upload new one soon.
Also what colour spec should i use for that material?

Hi guys. Hereīs my latest wip - roman warrior. Hope Iīll finish this one.
http://img72.imageshack.us/img72/8279/xport1dz6.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Right now itīs 1340 triangles, but there are many tris around the centre of mirroring (especially on the helmet) Iīm going to take care of later, when the model is done and ready for unwrapping.
I was working on this just for fun and I believe that the armor isnīt exact so if anyone finds some (historical) inaccuracy, please, tell me. I like when my work is made perfectly, especially in case like this.
