Well, I personally wouldn't have put the window in that spot. As a composition now, that moonlight coming in splits your scene into two pieces. That wouldn't have been so bad if it wasn't also directly in the center. I'd also pick one of those candles to be brighter than the other. Maybe make one of them a lamp/lantern since as far as I know a candle is a candle and they both illuminate the same amount.
Heres what I'm trying to say-

Hey, looking pretty good there, rawrsie. I especially like the designs you have painted on the blade. If I had to make some suggestions, I'd say the handle could use a little more edging on its harder bits. (such as around the handguard, and possibly around the pommel) You already have some pretty good edging on the blade itself, so no worries there. I like the designs on the blade so much, I really think you should scale them up a bit. Let them take up more space on the blade. If you do that, you could also tweak their colors a bit to make them look as if they were carved directly into the steel. Right now they look like they were painted onto the surface, and an etched look to them would be really appealing. I noticed you mirrored the texture for the blade, but the blade itself has separate UV mapping for each side. Since you went ahead and gave it more than one side, go ahead and take advantage of it. Put separate scratches, weathering on each side. Maybe a touch of rust on one side but not the other, or a dried blood stain or two. Now that you have the base colors and design down, really play around with what you can do with the texture.
Its a very solid model. You'll probably really like it on the polycount boards. A lot of expertise around here. When you post an update on this model, include a wireframe so that we can see where the polys are going to. 240 tris is entirely reasonable, but its always nice to see a wireframe.

I still have some work to do on the textures, they're not too interesting at the moment, especially the metal ornaments on the door.
Emil Mujanovic
03-08-2007, 07:08 PM
That's coming along Geezus, though my only crit would be that you failed to capture the proportions from the reference. Most of the planks you have look thinner and the building is looking wider at the base. Even the metal ornament on the door is thinner in your model. So I guess add a bit more mass into a few of the areas.
Also, everything is looking really straight where the reference is a little wonky and bent. Breaking up those straight lines will improve the model tenfold.
Keep it up man.

Hay Geezus, throw a FFD modifier and squish in the middle, you'll be surprised how much character that will add, you could also add a noise modifier to shake things up a bit. Also try sloping the roof in more like the reference.

Thanks /images/graemlins/smile.gif
I had never heard of the character Porco Rosso before. When I had the idea I thought it would be fun to make a Pig Pilot just because of the saying "When Pigs Fly."
I was sure it had been done plenty of times before though, since it wasn't that original of an idea. I'll be adding some pics of Porco to my reference folder. I like the name Porco Rosso too - maybe I will just end up calling this a redesign of that character /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Heh...SEKNeox's awesome work reminds me of a mod I'm making for Oblivion (it's a little further along than this screenie shows (there's a huge castle in the works and the path to it is done, little hut village halfway and all) and everything handmade by me...as you can maybe tell by the less than stellar texture work /images/graemlins/frown.gif ):
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v506/MacD/BrokenGroundKeep2.jpg
I'm also working on a dojo (hell, everyone needs to have made one! Right?), but this is more a lighting testrender than anything else...the idea is a setting sun coming through the front door, getting reflected off the ground into teh corner (if that makes sense):
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v506/MacD/dojo_004.jpg

Damn MacD, is that a Oblivion-climbing map!?
I remember having a blast with those maps from Counter-Strike...
Until I fell down, started to laugh uncontrollable, and... well, here we are /images/graemlins/smile.gif
I guess it kinda is /images/graemlins/smile.gif I like me my platformers :P
But I've been playtesting and have come up with a solution to inevitable frustrations. First off, jumping isn't such a focus...much of it is either closing on archer/wizardtype characters or distance sniping (depending on if you want to smash, archer or wizzard your foes to smithereens /images/graemlins/smile.gif). And just walking: Oblivion's liberal playercharacter collision detection takes care of the rest (I swear, the gaps over which you can walk in the game are quite entertaining if you don't take care /images/graemlins/smile.gif).
Also, I've added in invisible walls around the platforms so that if you ever fall off, you slide down to a point close to where you fell off. I still need to get a custom air-whoosh sound effect going when you hit those slides, so it seems as if it's the wind which deposits you slightly lower. You can still commit hari-kiri if you want to though, to enjoy the scenery flashing by as you plumet :P
My biggest problem is probably going to be segmenting the huge castle you are adventuring up to. I'm not to sure how exactly to handle it yet (even though I've pretty much finished the mock up), and I really don't want it to be just a front gate loading screen type thing; I want to wander around the castle/emir's wizard tower a bit.

Hey all, this is my first real post on the polycount forum and I thought it was about time I let people know what I'm workin on.
I decided I wanted to "update" the wardrobes of two well known character classes from one very well know video game franchise. The character classes...The Black and White mage...the game...Final Fantasy! I wanted to make the costumes more realistic and very fashionable. (The Devil Wears Prada meets Fantasy)
As of now I have the Black mage modeled and I'm looking for some heavy feed back for her....theres alot of first for me in this model so any suggestions would be very helpful, thanks.
Oh, and as I was photoshoping these images together I realized that her arms were to short so I did fix that...if anyone else notices too.

hi man, that last one I took a shortcut- I mudboxed bits of him and baked out some lighting as a base, but still I painted a lot of bits by hand. I'm really liking it, infact it makes my ambition to do a short animation come back to life.. one thing I liked was making the entire texture look like one material in photoshop, stone/cloth/padding and using the file texture painting to paint the different versions onto parts of the model, and touch up afterwards

Jarrod, this is meant to be a bomb shelter yeah? How come it has a corrugated iron ceiling? Shouldn't there be some kind of wall or ceiling lights? I'm sure whoever is down there doesn't want to be sitting in the dark.

thanks, you're right i do need to add a some more light sources. and that light encasing pic looks cool, i will probably use that style when i add them.
as for the ceiling, i am just going off one of my refs, world war 2 bomb shelter, the Laval Shelter (lots of graffiti now though):

Anyone help with some tips for less choppy wrinkles?
Trem for powerwrinkles simply freeze the polygons sitting under the bit that you want to wrinkle up ad move the non-frozen polygons over the edge, dragging them down in a gently manner.
for sharp wrinkles you can do the opposite, ie freezing the overlapping part and tucking the editable polygons under the wrinkle. There is a nice vid showing how to make fingernails by Arshlevon laying around somewhere showing just that.
Update! I tried a smoother version of th efacial features but I think I'll switch back to the chiseled version. Slapping a base body and adding template hair also.
Any good recommendation for highpoly hairstyling? THe kind of solution in which you actually comb long hair over the skull either in Max or Maya. I've heard or Ornatrix... But I guess I'll end up with transparent poly stripes anyways ha!

from what i can tell in my refs, the steel plates are used as cieling tiles, hiding wire and crap, then above that is a more reinforced roof. keep in mind this is the level after its been attacked. current tri count total (including stuff offscreen) is about 6,000 i believe.
