Thanks /images/graemlins/grin.gif
Doom3 uses hybrid maps, which only smoothes faces connected in UV map, and the edges of the UV Island stay unsmooted.
Basically it means you seperate UV Islands like smoothing groups - the resulted UV map may have a few more islands as a result, but is worth it as it's the best alternative.

you thinking of the wrong Indian. One is from India (the chilled monkey brains and Snake Surprise[reference to Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom] is from the country of India.

the Indian you are refering to is a horrible misnomer for the Native American tribes(who should really be refered to by their indvidual tribe names since each tribe had very different cultures and beliefs), and can be considered an insult to said peoples.

Johny: Looking sweet, nice maps... The normals for the hair seem much too strong, makes it look like he has some sort of plastic wig or something....

Looking really cool fire, tones of the ears dont seem to be consistant with the face. Lighting seems much more harsh there and its way over saturated with little transition into the neutral skintone. Thats about all i can crit. Great to see you're doing some work there instead of just getting high you jobless hippy.

Big rant/reply: sorry for not replying for a little, have had a lot on -- the self shadowing was a shader render texture hack, but when it's moved around and navigated it has huge issues, coming up with garbage. I don't know what the issue is, all I can come up with is max's viewport support for render to texture in shaders is pretty horrid. Sooo I've bunked it back to a pre bake map input. The code knows how to implement shadows into the sss, it's just they're not dynamically generated, which is bad but still is useful for game engine comparison (which is all viewport shaders should be used for in the end anyway... direct viewport to game comparison). Still have a few things to try with the dynamic shadows but I may give up on it for a while 'til max supports render to texture in shaders better.

I want to test out if you can make the weapon and damage behaviour in Spring very close to reality while using its ability to handle large armies to let actual unit strengths come through (rather than letting infantry survive a tank hit, having cannons fire only 200m far or other videogame-standard nonsense like that).

I was thinking of redefining the Fantasy races, with a new (place in) civilisation, based on their attributes, in a Victorian-esque world. For example, Elves would form the bourgeoisie, because they're intellectual and know magics, Orcs would be the soldier types, and so on.

The Grenadiers of the 18th century (when they still threw grenades) were picked for being tall, strong and brave enough to wait before throwing the grenade. An ideal job for Ogres!

Not sure about the armour. Looks a bit misplaced on a grenadier, but typical grenadier garment is classy and very un-Ogrish.

Assymmetrical tattoo's on her waist. Define what exactly the knee-guards are. The cyan color...does it glow? What is it? Take the furry collar idea and impliment it in her boots for some design cohesion.(it is a furry collar right? you can sorta see her shoulders through it, so its either a furry collar or an inflatable toilet seat) Give her a pack of smokes rolled into one of her sleeves or something. Nose/lip/eyebrow ring?

Those look really good to me. I'd probably go for more contrast on the Orc's armour (mainly really bright hot highlights to pick out the metal details), unless you're planning on using a specular map or something. I hope you're just keeping it pure diffuse though, I think that looks great.

The Skaven's fur around his face seems too regular and well-kept - probably should be more like the leg fur, more clumpy, messy and dirty.

Noonie
08-24-2006, 05:55 PM

Those pieces are really coming together. I like the small details. I was once told to lay a light leather spec or bump map over the leather with an overlay. I think it helps some. I need to do it for the Skaven shoulder piece.
I was working from a concept piece off the mythic site. I may desaturate it more to get a bit more grey but this felt closer to the concept to me.

Slaught, that's looking pretty cool. For some reason it reminds me of this one boss from the first Bloodrayne, I can't remember his name though.

Loose Canon, That looks pretty good, although the one little leg seems to stand out from the rest, like it's sharper than everything else, and my eye is almost immediately drawn to it.

Geezus, that's pretty good, however it reminds me of the way a dog walks when it knows its in trouble, or is scared.

08-29-2006, 01:18 AM
Geezus - The shoulder blades would absorb a lot of that vertical movement you've got in the head end of the spine. The head normally stays pretty level. At the moment the shoulders are completely locked off.

Vailias
08-29-2006, 01:56 AM
Geezus: also the Hips need a little swager with each step.
Its very nice motion overall, but seems to be missing a lot of subtleties. You do have some secondary motion, which makes the anim pretty believeable, but if you add in things like the hips and shoulders actually moving the limbs into the stride I think it will be even better and very natural feeling. Rather than simply bobbing, have them rotate on their vertical and forward axis.

Neo God, it is a ton of fun designing and making toys... we have some straightlaced clients, and we help out artists and designers with their projects, and we design and manufacture our own product. The trains have been featured in Juxtapoz at least once that I know of... it was quite a thrill.

@rooster: I was annoyed by that part of the design, but it does make some sense. It works as a two way zipper, so its totally zipped when the zippers are each at an opposite end, kinda wierd but it allows the bottom to be unzipped, I found a real life trench emulating the style and the zipper function: picture (http://img246.imageshack.us/img246/3922/showphotophpus6.jpg).

@Pseudo: Thanks and yes, like SupRore said, its a matrix inspired Half-Life mod called The Specialists (http://www.specialistsmod.net) , its an online MP 3rd/1st person action game, definatly one of my favorite HL mods /images/graemlins/laugh.gif.

Calling the geometry done:
http://brome.toogeek.com/stuff/crap/underworld4.jpg

Not much was done since my last update. Some chains here and there. Once I start to texture it a few sub-divisions might appear, aswell as additional chains. I'm ready to move on to texturing...

Enix, sweetnes. Love it when people take that extra step and actually put their models into an engine!

Wetterschneider, damn cool /images/graemlins/smile.gif Enix, that gives me a pang of fanboy excitement, love the nobody design, and you've done a good job with him /images/graemlins/smile.gif

edit: thought I'd post this one too, my shadow's are borked and don't have time to fix it (getting holes and garbage in them) Thinking this shader's going as far as it will, going to try to start something fresh soon /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Looking good Enix. I dig how it turned out.

Skeptical Nate: Good work. I would suggest pushing the vines a bit more. Build some diffent colors in and a bit of contrats. right now they seem neon green.

Adam: Cant wait to see the textures on that. I like the shot so far.

J.I. What can I say. I dig it. I should work on getting beter with shaders. I would say the tip of his nose looks just the slightest stretched but you can barely see it. nice piece.

First time I've actually posted something here so I thought I'd post a shot from a Quake 4 MP map I'm working on; modelled in Blender 3D. I'll be 'reporting' on my progress (http://www.quake3bits.com/cgi-bin/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST&f=6&t=9&st=#entry1) on my own webbly site for those that are interested.

Considering the nose is probablly the most important feature of your character, i would get soem reference as to what a nose actually looks like and try to model it accurately =)

Nice one EQ, that's looking great. As a side question, why did you turn on faceted faces? That was one of the best reasons to switch to MudBox in my opinion. Regardless, it looks nice, and has a really sexy mouth and nostril area, and lots of nice subtle facial detail throughout.

Ben: Thanks, I've been working more in facted mode as i go, it helps to make a much smoother mesh when you're looking at the raw polys instead of smoothed, where its easy to get messy/bloddy details happening. I've heard some people actually talking about rendering out normals liek this too, that you get crisper detail but i have not taken the time to try it yet. Bug vahl about that if you really want to know =)

had to make an alternate texture for the falx, this time with a bronze handle
http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d3/shika01/067fe25b.jpg

mostly the same NM, the pattern at the top of the handle was generated from simple floating geo.
