Er - WHY did you hand paint the entire thing? It looks like you're trying for something realistic, yet it looks cartoony. If its meant to be of a cartoon look it doesn't look the part at all. It's in a weird middle ground that isn't very happy /images/graemlins/frown.gif

How long did this take you? If you're going for something more realistic looking I suggest you save yourself a lot of time and source your base materials (to start) then go from there.

[/ QUOTE ]

I actually wanted it to be somewhere between realistic and cartoony and dark at the same time. Im just playing around a bit with style and hand painting everything just for practice. This door isnt for a bigger project or anything. Its just for fun and practice.

warby: Her head is throwing me off from the rest of the character. She looks like a soccermom wrapped up in ninja gear. IMO it'd be more fitting for the character if she were Asian looking; dark dark hair and deeper complexion.

[/ QUOTE ]

Why do ninjas -have- to be asian? Especially future ninjas... Let's be progressive.

On another note: She looks fantastic. Are you going to keep it fairly clean texture wise (ala Team Ninja)? It'd be cool to see this textured all battle torn.

Arsh: Nice buddha! I really like that the cloth is relief and not fully modelled out. Makes it look like a real statue.

[/ QUOTE ]

I used it as an example - my point was that every time I look at this (great) model, all I can see is typical soccer mom wrapped in ninja gear. That's all. Progressive is fine so long as it works.

I really like this model - here's hoping for a detail pass on the textures.

An awesome standard of work in here as usual..

More on my real 3d warhammer 40K bolter rifle.

I used the grip from the spas 12, filling and widening it with car filler. The wood out the front is a brace for the blade. Some parts are coated with foil which will have the covering paint knocked back to reveal it in little areas. The last shot is upside down to get a feel for the finished thing while it dries on the table. Detailing and paint next /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Adam: I've got no idea what purpose your structure serves but it looks quite derelict. The rusted look combined with the gaping holes for windows remind me quite a bit of a horror story. Lots of people associate something startling with horror, though for me it's the unnatural or starkly odd that causes the most terror. The idea of ACESNDING up into this place is quite unnerving somehow, possibly because having it below ground or even at ground level could have someone accidentally ending up in it. With this place you have to make a conscious decision to enter it... oddly chilling.

Daz
06-24-2006, 11:19 PM
They're actually in water Steakhouse, like an oil rig.
Redsand fort is in the Thames estuary, and they are a series of offshore forts designed to keep the Nazi's out.

adam

Heya Daz, malcolm passed that link on to me mid-way thru the 2D pass on this and instantly found images to areas I had to guess on. I've added my own touches to the tower (like the welded panelling on the top of the towers - first image).

Also, the tower I did isn't a replica of any specific tower, but just made of the cooler bits I found from all of them. The plan is to copy the tower 6 more times then rearrange some pieces around and introduce new modular ones to make them look different, that is... if I have the time. I'd like to have this wrapped up for Monday.

Thanks again!

Not bad, especially the mouth area looks good.

You really need to work on the connection of the nose.
The best way would be to use the loops of the lower cheeks (those running outside of the fold that runs to the corner of the nose) and let them run all the way up the the nose and across the middle of it. This way you also get nice circular loops around the nostrils.

Otherwise: (my standard remark on almost all faces /images/graemlins/laugh.gif ) the outer corner of the eyes, where the upper on the lower eyelit meet, looks a lot better if you have the loop of the upper lit go outwards to the ear. But worry about that later and fix the nose first.

And the feet have faaar too many polys, ZCubed /images/graemlins/smile.gif
Give the feet more shape, take out those excess edges which are forming long thin polys, and add those polys back in at the wrists (and elbows probably), which will currently look very weird when deforming.
Nice proportions and style, just the mesh needs a bit of cleaning up and optimising then he'll be good to go for UV and rig.

Hey cheybea! Nice to see you posting some work /images/graemlins/smile.gif I'm still learning meshflow myself atm but as far as I can tell it's looking really good. I especially like the way you've accentuated her cheekbones, but imo she could use a little more fleshiness and width to her face. I can't wait to see her finished!

Hey almighty_gir, it's been a while, nice to see you're still around.

Nice flow cheybea, try to smooth the mouth corners. The nasolabial fold should flow all the way up to the nostrils, not end on the corners. Some tweaking on the ear and should be a great head.

More on my warhammer 40,000 Bolter Rifle prop. After a silver base coat and a black top coat, here's where it's at. I'm going to sandpaper off the black, leaving it dull and in some areas letting the silver through. There will also be a lot of weathering and other colours, like the brass shells in the mag. I'll accentuate the winged skull with another colour too.

the pistol grip looks like it should be larger. For some dude in a space marine uniform and big hands that thing would be tiny.

Gmanx
07-03-2006, 01:09 AM
Thanks Lord Scottish!.
Moz - Yeah, that's the biggest grip I could find (from a spas 12 shotgun replica) and has the biggest trigger guard too - for those big power-armoured gloves. It sits big in your hand, but the rest of the thing is so freaking huge...If I had more space/time I'd make a wooden grip from scratch.

gmanx that rifle is great! I don't think the grip is too small, fairly similar in size to ones I've seen before at "games day" etc.

Are you going to dirty up the blade a bit then? would be nice to see a few nicks and cuts out of that.

Vassago: Yes but I posted an older version in this thread here and it was a different link.

If you turn on "catch global AI exceptions" in the options you'll get an "unhandled Global AI exception" message when that crash happens. AF told me to leave that off since the AI supposedly catches them already but I think it's called an unhandled exception because the AI didn't.

Jaco, the wrinkles look sex. i think the skin looks a little too hot colorwise. imho, the magic is in the greys. /images/graemlins/wink.gif

Bradfordart, bodacious style dude. i dig on his whacky armor.

graves, looks good. shoulder pad is buggin me a bit. its repetition seems to obvious, i'd make the copied plates run into a larger peice that is arranged in a way that makes it feel more firmly attatched to his arm.

Fuse, it's coming along. i'ould push the contrast a bit. i tend to paint in small dots where the darkest features of the face would be, like the nostrils, corners of the mouth, eye folds etc. and blend them in, and start from there.

I think the texture is good...Very good likeness.
But it needs some more contrast and a lot more colorvariation to make it "come to life".

i recognised the face straight away fuse, but the highlights give me that "dodged" impression, which makes it look more like dry skin.

ferg: i wanted to get it into zbrush as soon as possible, so the base mesh is pretty ugly /images/graemlins/blush.gif

i did my best with the texture, sucks that you think it's killing it... personally i think it came out better than my previous texturing attempts ..i think i've learned a great deal this time around, for the sake of actually finishing the model i need to continue with the rest of the skin

Sectaurs
07-11-2006, 08:37 AM
Fuse, its coming along well, but it lacks any real depth. Might want to try flattening the image to one layer, duplicating it and setting it to overlay or some other layer style to jump-start some real values in there.

the whole thing is very monotone. add some red where the skin is thinnest and at the tip of the nose. add some subtle blue around the jaw for his facial hair.

also, it looks like you've painted his cheekbone to not follow the modeled cheekbone, which makes it look a little awkward, particuarly towards his ear.

Its a fine effort, just don't give up on it yet

Makkon

Hmm, looks fine fuse. I agree that the texture could use some work, but we all have room for improvement.

Here's another little thing I've been working on. Anybody got some ideas as of where I can go with it?

Probably not done with the mesh just yet, as the polyrate still is quite.. hmm, high. Though the thing Im meddling with as for the moment, and I just started, is as the 2nd img tells, a try for a normalmap, in the end it'll be at least. :P

Finished at last. Sorry for the blurry pics - proper photo session is this Wednesday (warhammer night at the bookshop where this is headed). The purity seal on the gun body is glueing at the moment which is why there's no pics of the other side yet - if I turn it over before the epoxy's cured it'll fall off. You can see the purity seal on the mag better in the second pic. The guys in the bookshop haven't seen this yet - they're gonna freak.

Warhammer 40,000 weapons and armour have purity seals on them to... well.. mark their purity. I think the ribbons have prayers or incantations on them to ward off malfunction or improve the weapons effectiveness (or whatever). Anyway they're allover the place in warhammer artwork.

well i have stricter texture than tri limits, =P could have smoothed it off way more, but i dont want it to look stoopidly detailed next to other assets in the game, as it is its in keeping without any alpha problems esp with mipmaps.

this will only ever be... what like 256 pixels long in game anyway

that indian is very nice, renaud. but so far i find it a bit hard to read the mouth expression, something strange seems to go on with the mouth corners.

i just started something new, for playing around with fx composer and preparing for new jobs mostly. hair will be covered by a "pickelhaube" helmet later, so not much emphasis on that.

You probably SHOULD use ref untill you can model proper edge loops in your sleep and THEN try some free hand.

*edit* Didn't mean to sound harsh there. Just giving my advice. I in no way am eluding to the fact that I can make models with perfect anatomy and edge loops in my sleep either. It's just always a good idea to start off taking in as much ref as you can.

Makkon
07-18-2006, 08:36 AM
However harsh his words may be, he's right. You need to use a reference until you do it naturally. In fact, even when you can do it naturally, you should still use a reference of some kind.
