Head's looking a tad wide there, Fuse, and also the body is looking a bit thick in general.
Ian McKellen is a pretty slim guy. He's also 5'11" tall, this guy looks shorter than that. I'm fairly sure it's the width of him making it look that way, but also it could be the arms are too short.

Nice work so far though. Keep it up! /images/graemlins/smile.gif

@ Slaught: Guybrush!!!! /images/graemlins/wink.gif
@ PeterK: Looking good /images/graemlins/smile.gif. Since you probably can afford the polies, perhaps try to cut the inner faces of the eyelids so you have an actual edgering going around the eyeball. Now it looks as if you have a flipped cone for the eye-cavity. Can work, too of course, but is more difficult to handle, imho and the edgering is better for uv's also.

Hey Vitor, that head mesh looks really nice. The ears seem a bit small, and the neck is kinda the wrong shape, but the definition on the face is well done.

I'm not quite sure who it's meant to be though.... for some reason I want to say Barry Pepper (the sniper guy from Saving Private Ryan), but I'm not sure, since I think this is a female head model /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Vitor
05-30-2006, 09:42 AM
Lol, yes she is a female /images/graemlins/laugh.gif but Barry Pepper isn't all that different anyways.. now that you said it the nose instantanialy reminded me him.

I think i'm going to break the game anyways, everyone that saw it on MSN and other foruns didn't got it, so no one here gets the cookie too /images/graemlins/laugh.gif It was meant to be Keira Knightley... Perhaps on my model it has a bit more face definiton which makes here look more older than usual, but those usual photos may get way more photoshop work than Johny's textures /images/graemlins/laugh.gif THIS (http://img58.imageshack.us/img58/6571/644403hz.jpg) was one of the references.

So what went wrong? /images/graemlins/frown.gif

Yes, and YES. I also found it extremely hard to make stuff symetrical.

I did this recently in about 4 to 5 hours work, an admission assignment. Excuse the 'fancy' foto, but I had to present it in a nice way. Unfortunatly I didn't know using metal wire armatures in this type of clay is a no go, so right now it's drying (and shrinking, appearantly) and the arms which have thick metal wire running through them are quite simply breaking apart at all the joints, which sucks, because now I can't bake it either. It was only my second attempt so I'll have plenty of time to make better sculptures over the summer, still it's a bit of a shame.

http://www.xs4all.nl/~eriksch/skullbox/sculpture.jpg

chi - did you model the face? It might be easier practicing textures on something with more standard proportions. The eyes seem very wide.

As for the skin; looks like you're only using the values of one color... its very monotone. Give it some red on the nose and cheeks, some blue/grey on his chin and lip, etc.

in the shader, desaturate the reds a little and/or try seperating the diffuse colour a bit more (more grayed yellow)

your eyebrows are represented in the normal, but looks like it's poking in instead of out /images/graemlins/smile.gif

For organics, make sure you do as much specular love as you give the diffuse.

Also, time to throw on some crap masks across all your texture passes /images/graemlins/smile.gif more pigmentation, scar tissue, larger pores, moles etc (eg if a mole appears in diffuse, make sure it appears across the board in spec, normal, and trans in one form or another - it's very rare that anything appears in one map and not another).

monitor calibration, make sure to try more than one:
http://images.google.com.au/images?q=monitor+calibration&hl=en

keep it up man!

Just a little start... I'm going to work on this from the bottom up, because if I finish the interesting parts first (face and torso), I get bored with the less interesting parts (limbs) and rush them.

Some quicky Zbrush sculpts.

Both are using the same base head, and have 30 minutes of work into each of them.

http://www.lunchboxcrew.com/ss/goat.jpg

http://www.lunchboxcrew.com/ss/zombie.jpg

The plan is to be able to get far enough along in less than 30 minutes that I can start working on smaller details like surface/skin texture. So far I'm still not that quick with Zbrush, but doing these speed attempts definitely helps for learning shortcuts and quicker ways of doing things.

I chose to drop the cartoon eyes, the face looked like it could use a set of proper eyes. Everything from the concept is implemented, now I'll see what else I should add. Hey KDR, this is looking pretty cool.
I think the eyes might be slightly too far apart (generally there's one eye width between human eyes, although obviously this varies).

Also I've noticed in the past few models you've made, the posture seems imbalanced, the weight of the model is distributed poorly.

I did a quick Liquify of your image in Photoshop to give an example of how I think the figure could look more dynamic even when she's not moving. Basically I just moved the legs back, bent the elbows back, put more curve in the spine - I think it ends up looking more dynamic and believable, and these are all quick and minor tweaks (soft selection is your friend).
Also turning the feet outwards slightly will help her look more balanced and believable.

Some 'real world' 3D /images/graemlins/smile.gif
Referenced from Warhammer 40,000, my take on a bolter. It will have a nice big blade on the front about equal to the length of the gun. It's for a local shop window display (plus I've always wanted to make one). My cheap Spas-12 BB gun provided the grip - it was the only thing I could find 'chunky' enough for the job. The construction is mostly foam-sandwich board, and will be clad in kitchen foil, painted, then rubbed down to give a 'steel' look.

head is awsome!

overall very nice but suffers from the same "unrigged" odd posture as jin. Also I think you are making your stands too small, they really don't compliment the characters too well. Sorry for sounding harsh but this could be better with some changes to the presentation.

I've been too burned out from final exams to come up with any good ideas, so I decided to do some fan art. This is my favorite character from an old PC RPG. It's a quick, rough job so far, so I'd be very impressed if someone could guess the name. /images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Awesome KDR - what are you making? A mod?

KDR_11k
06-14-2006, 12:46 PM
A tiny one. Mostly just trying out ideas. The side you see there will have units become more powerful as your energy capacity increases, plans for the others include a side that can't produce metal at all (or only in small amounts from geothermal vents) and relies on cheap units with reclaim ability to get that metal (which is only used for the big units and superweapons). The big unit on that pic can't use its missile barrage if you're below 6000 capacity (done by having the gun use that and giving all capacity increasers a huge energy production rate) and I'm planning to equip some of their swarmer drones with heavy weapons or shields above a certain capacity, for example. It's still lacking a metal extractor, otherwise I'd put up a download link.

MoP
06-14-2006, 01:23 PM
Hehe, sounds pretty interesting. I might give it a try if you ever give it a proper release. Gonna make any custom maps for it?
I've been dying to improve that default tree model and texture... any idea where I can find/modify that mesh?

KDR_11k
06-14-2006, 02:01 PM
No idea but looking through the sdz (zip) and sd7 (7z, 7-zip) files might be worth a try.

I'm not planning on custom maps yet, there are so many maps for the engine already I don't see why I should and I don't think I'd make a good map designer.

That is very cool kdr. TA:spring is cool.

Something that reminds me of it sorta is Urban assault. Units were built out of energy etc.. and you can take control of a unit yourself. Which i think you can do in taspring.

KDR_11k
06-15-2006, 01:17 PM
Meh, repurposed the energy building as a metal extractor as well and put it up for download here (http://mitglied.lycos.de/KDR_11k/unlinked.htm). Throw the file into the mod folder.

Sectaurs, try focusing on getting large clumps that look right fom afar before going too detailed with the individual strands. Right now it reads like fur, but super silky smooth fur that sits exactly along the surface with no clumps or inmperfections or thickness whatsoever. Work with a larger hairy brush to build up masses, then detail it out.

Er - WHY did you hand paint the entire thing? It looks like you're trying for something realistic, yet it looks cartoony. If its meant to be of a cartoon look it doesn't look the part at all. It's in a weird middle ground that isn't very happy /images/graemlins/frown.gif

How long did this take you? If you're going for something more realistic looking I suggest you save yourself a lot of time and source your base materials (to start) then go from there.

Why do ninjas -have- to be asian? Especially future ninjas... Let's be progressive.

On another note: She looks fantastic. Are you going to keep it fairly clean texture wise (ala Team Ninja)? It'd be cool to see this textured all battle torn.
