View Full Version : So what are you working on?
Makkon
04-30-2006, 10:12 PM
Hmmm, probably a good idea, LAGtheNoggin. My ref was actually based off of an older concept I did a few months ago. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v671/Makkon/fuzz.jpg THe brow looks fine in the concept, but I guess it doesn't trasnlate well into 3d.
I've been modeling out the skull of the guy so that I could try to give him better facial anatomy. I thought it looked pretty cool. If I can get his skull to look proper, then I can give him a proper face too. I can change the brow in the skull tomorrow after school, so it looks more like the pictures you posted.
Paintovers anyone?!?
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v671/Makkon/foxboyskull01.jpg
[EDIT]
I got a bit of time before I have to go to bed. I tweaked the brow a bit to have a smoother transition. Perhaps that'll fix his demented face.

I like the original brow. Both are probably fine.
LAGtheNoggin
05-01-2006, 07:39 AM
Nice concept! Well, if the brow works in concept it will work in 3D, it's simply a matter of interpretation.
Hmmm. That's an improvement towards a more animal-like skull, maybe try pulling that centre line a little outwards for some rounder forehead, but I don't think it's the skull alone that's giving you the human feel there. The problem lies in the muscle and expression: in concept you have your character squinting hard, it's the muscles making the bulge; whereas in 3D it looks like he's at rest, suggesting narrow deep-set human-like eyes are his natural shape. Get some eye lids in there and make em squint.
Here's a pair of eyes I'm thinking of. Clicky. (http://bitmap.attakus.fr/blacksad/images/blacksadwall.jpg) Note how much eye lid there would be if he was squinting.
And a red line (http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y87/LAGtheNoggin/MakkonRedLine.jpg), I'm not very good at these, sorry, I made him angry...
Good luck!

Completely rebuilt his face, based off of the skull. What a test of patience... I think I got a look I can live with; screw the concept, he looks better this way. He looks a bit bug eyed, but I was referencing from a cat (he's sort of based off of a cat and fox). He looks much younger, much more cartoonish, which is what I wanted. I can make him squint in facial animation, but for now I think I'll leave it in this nutral state.
Thanks again, Noggin, for your help /images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Thanks guys. Its a bit different from my usual style... hard to make myself leave out some of the details for the stylized look I was going for.
LAG: Vikings loved pastel colors. Everyone knew that!
Tulkamir: Heh, yeah I know. Viking is also a verb, not a noun, but this is a charicature of the usual stereotype... so horns and name are there are /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

aesir
05-07-2006, 06:24 PM
yes. not even getting into the fact that your mesh would subdivide poorly in zbrush (you want all quads), theres no way even a pro could get something all full of metal and smooth surfaces like that to look good in zbrush. Zbrush is BAD at metallic smooth surfaces. Its near impossible to do it unless you have the patience of buddha.. It would be much faster to model high poly in max or maya or whatever.

I see what you mean. I’ve played with Zbrush on it's own but I haven't imported anything in from Max yet, that's why I wanted to experiment with this guy. I thought i would be able to use the masking tools to create plate separation outlines for the armor (using the draw tool as a mask to create the outlines, inverting the lines and using the Deformation/inflate tools). All with the idea of creating a normals map for the ingame model.

i would say those vines look like they were made... using a couple of spline circles attached to each other like.. 6 of those .. and then used a line to perform a loft.. and then on the skin parameteres he incresead the rotation and he got that twisted vvine look. /images/graemlins/wink.gif ehehe easy peazy

Haven't modeled in awhile because of school... started this one today. Using the modular technique to modeling buildings, working well but I'm a bit rusty. I still have general proportion/demension fixes and some cleaning up to do.

Vin Diesel?
yeah, vin diesel. took some pinning down. suppose the small eyes, the flat nose and the big bottom lip are the main points I was going for. still needs a lot more work though
actually MOP, lineker has that same nose as diesel:)
Yeah, I figured his ears weren't big enough if it were actually Lineker /images/graemlins/smile.gif
I do see the resemblence to Vin Diesel, it's going well, but I think the jaw needs widening a tad?
possibly, I will look at it some more tomorrow, been staring at it too long now.

LoTekK: Some sort of hicksville Solid Snake? /images/graemlins/tongue.gif
Peris: That's looking very good, I like the style. I would say you can optimise that more though, if you're going for a low-poly model. The forehead and eyes esecially could lose lots of polys without changing shape or losing detail.
However if it's going to be something higher-poly, you might wanna clean it up some more so you have mainly quads to work with - right now it's a fairly random mix of quads and triangles.
Keep it up! /images/graemlins/smile.gif

I believe Poops trick is to load the high poly model in layers and in pieces. That way he can go into the layer menu in max and hide pieces while he works on the low res model. Say you finish modeling the chest of the low poly. Then you hide the chest high poly layer and unhide an arm and just keep modeling the low poly. In theory it should free up video ram that the program no longer needs to read a full high poly character.

I use my tongue to...
Really though, from another thread:
Make a new layer, set it to the default layer, HIDE that layer, then import the zbrush object. It will import to the hidden layer, and it won't try to view it, BUT it will be selected! So you can convert to edit poly, add all faces to one smoothing group (use a smooth modifier) and then collapse, right click on properties and "display as a box". I've brought in an 8 million poly model that way before as a single obj. Mind you I have a decent laptop machine, but still, should work on most pc's.

looks cool daz. is it from life? or reference? one thing that seems to stick out at this gestural phase is the current size of her ears. your ears and nose keep growing throughout your life(and even a bit after death!!), so most old people have pretty big ears and noses. seems like you got a pretty big honker on there, might want to dumbo her up a bit.
man thats going to be fun when you start all the wrinkley bits.awesome stuff, makes me miss the tangable touchable art.
It's from life. She does have a big nose yeah. I want to exaggerate things at this stage so as I shave away at it for a closer likeness I've got enough clay there. For an old biddy she does have remarkably tiny ears, but I'm really only going to be hinting at them anyway, since her imminent hairdo almost completely covers them up.
Yeah I am having an absolute blast with it.

50/50 on this one. Great model and great texture. Bad feet (pigeon toe'd?) and american white male living in feudal japan? also the pattern on the swords blade needs to be toned down a little, it's not ridged but a design caused by the heating and cooling of metal

hey hawken thanks for the critics /images/graemlins/smile.gif theres a reason why i went for a non japanese samurai ( seem awkward doesnt it ? ) in this textured characters the only one i intend to make truly japanese like is JIn, mugen will be brazilian like because of his fighting style and manners . Kariya is more "america" like since he states in a sentence "im a man who was born in the wrong country in the wrong time" .
enough chit chat back to texturing, and i will fix all that people have been telling me ! /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Using splines to make edge looped/dense enough facial mesh for zbrush. (Thanks arsh for letting me see your model to see how the edge loops go). Subd/box modeling just isnt my thing for this. This way I can tweak with edit poly, and have the benefit of making a more or less dense mesh that conforms more to my specs via bezier curves.

oxy, how do you get that technique to work? I tried once but it seemed to just randomly connect polygons between all the spline points like a borked zbrush import.. dunno what I was doing wrong
i hope i am getting the likeness right
