Okay, I can display her in xNormal, had to flip the Y on the normalmap, though:
http://mitglied.lycos.de/KDR_11k/pics/pimp/9D92B614_3C5A_4F58_9363F07C58DDCD06.jpg
The map is rendered in ORB, the normalmap I got from xNormal was total garbage for some reason and the occlusion map has weird errors that look like the model rendered from some other point of view.
Looks pretty good to me /images/graemlins/smile.gif
What settings were you using in xNormal? I used .OBJ files, turned on supersampling to 4x, checked the "tangent space" checkbox, and left everything else as default, it gave me a perfect map first time.
If you wanna send me the source/lowpoly meshes I could give it a test if you can't figure it out.

I don't know about the concept you're using but if the tubes below the cockpit are the weapons that strikes me as a very stupid design. On rough terrain you'd have to expose your vulnerable points long before your weapons can get an unobstructed line of fire. Tanks usually have a very flat profile and the gun on the top to allow them to take cover behind something with only the weapon exposed.

A tie tank, that's interesting. I would render it with a self illuminated texture, because it's hard to tell what is texture and what is shading on the pic.
I revamped my website a bit according to the criticism I recieved. Some bigger pictures and more texture sheets. And the pilot on the left is finally me, yay /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Careful, she's looking downward. Your model looks like you're using a pic that's not straight on and contains perspectivic distortion as an ortho ref. That disturbs the 1/3-1/3-1/3 hairline-eyebrows-nose-chin partitioning of the face. Also, she's smiling while you modeled the mouth relaxed.

Because people were complaining about anime.
Hehe KDR, not bad - however even if you're trying to get away from anime here, you should really choose different material colours, it's kinda defeating the more realistic proportions by having a very cartoony colour and shading style.
I'd recommend just applying one material to all the meshes, just a basic grey or low-saturation colour of your choice. That way you can focus on all of the actual realism in proportion and detail without being distracted by the colours.
My main crit on it at the moment is that the eyes are too high up. They're the right shape, and the nose and the lips look good, just move the whole area with the eyes and eyebrows down a little and she should look even better.
Keep it up /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Here is something cooking tonight on low fire,
A texture tutorial I'm doing for friends wanting to learn the tools of the trade,
so this isn't exactly a real skin.
But if it doesn't suck too bad at the end I might post it. Any takers so far?

Hey everyone, here's what I made after my first day with Zbrush, crits are welcome! I guess I spent about 5 hours on it or so.
http://uweb.txstate.edu/~is1010/zbrushhead3.jpg
(and yes, he isn't supposed to have eyebrows yet /images/graemlins/wink.gif )
Is there anyone that could help me with exporting the normal maps and displacement maps from Zbrush? Whenever I try it either just makes a gray texture or it does nothing as far as I can tell. I was going to follow Poop's tutorial using Max, but I don't have enough memory to import the high-poly of my head model into Max. Thanks!
/EDIT
Got it dumped into Melody, here it is with a 2048 map on my "low poly" head (~8000 tris)

I think your crits are very legitimate, but on the other hand I think this is a great example for the average being uninteresting. Your paintover has very good proportions and straight eyes, but his original model is way more interesting in my opinion and still within the border that I would call believable. It has it's own distinct character.

Just messing around in ZBrush. This is pretty much the first time I've messed around with ZB's renderer and colour painting things, the colour map is literally 2 minutes of messing around, I still don't even know where the colour picker tool is.
And ZB doesn't seem to undo texture paint changes in the 3D view, only in Projection Master.

I was afraid of that, I'll check the verts again and see if I can make it look a teeny bit smoother. I think I'm back on track, I made a fancy to-do list to get past the mental block on how to push the texture. I'm still all ears on ideas, though.
Nice bales. Heh. Now I'm no expert but it seems to be that the round haybales are usually pretty huge (5-8 feet around) and the smaller ones are square.

Ninjas: Going by the shape of his feet and the position of the flower bed I'd say he's clipping into the stones surrounding the flowerbed. Even if there is a niche where he stands (the background suggests that), the viewer doesn't see that and it's perceived as clipping.
Ninjas
04-22-2006, 12:44 PM
Yeah. I think you're right KDR. I'm usually pretty keen on doing things "right", BUT this was just a test to show the (non-tech savvy) cast that we aren't totally full of shit.
I also think the robot is maybe a hair too washed out. Overall, for something that is just going to be a background prop, I'm pretty pleased with myself, and now I'm fairly confident I CAN do a proper job with reasonable render times of comping it it when it comes to it.
noritsune
04-22-2006, 03:09 PM
ninjas, looking cool! even if this was just a quick mock-up, it's still very forceful and double-take-inducing. agree with kdr's crit abou the feet and would only add a touch more ambient light into the mech and a touch more blue into the mech's cast shadow. if, that is, you feel like pushing it further. nice!

That's looking great rooster! It reminds me of the Models from Half-life 2.
Here's a project I started earlier this week. I'm doing a bust of a character I modeled awhile ago for the GTA Character CG Chat comp.
Here's the character

And his much more stylised revamp

Striff,
I like how that looks, looks freaking cool. What kinda lighting did you use. Is this a game level or just an environemnt. Looks good, look forward to more shots.

hey striff, could you post the photo that youre working from? assuming there is one. the way those corbels under the rampart come down to such a tight point looks very unlikely... but prove me wrong

That looks great, striff!!!
A little cartoon character I've been working on. My dad says it's face looks too human. I dunno.

Makkon, your dad may be on to something. My initial impression was planet of the apes make-up. Maybe it's the eyes.

Noir the image I am working from can be found here :

If I knew what a corbel or rampart was I could tell ya if you were right hehe, I havn't taken any architecture classes yet.
And Makk, that is looking pretty sweet, reminds me of Star Fox somewhat.
Cay it is just an environment for now. As for the lighting it is just a spot light with no decay, set with a light blue color. I also have final gather turned on.

hey striff, nice, I was totally wrong. the rampart is that castley looking thing at the top of the wall, and a corbel is a vertical bracket or thing that supports a ceiling or projection from a wall. In this case, the corbels were those long triangular things supporting the rampart projection... and they are in fact as long and pointy as you made them. /images/graemlins/smile.gif
one thing I see that you could do that would improve this is to make the shapes and construction of those arches a bit more accurate. The whole arch should not be exactly a semicircle, but a semicircle with a short vertical bit supporting either end. like the arch is actually raised up from the springing point, or part where it meets the horizontal at the base. also, you should add a row a stones along the outside edge of the arch to separate it from the normal wall courses. errr...I drew a little diagram of what I'm trying to explain, with yours on the left and my suggestion on the right:
http://www.scottduquette.com/tmp/sienna_arches_01.jpg
hope this wasnt too confusing! keep it up, great to see some more architecture on here.
ps: also I think all the stonework could be scaled up a bit (meaning more smaller bricks), and possibly be more sensitive to where the cracks in the texture fall on your model. you dont want a seam between two bricks to ever fall on a 90 degree edge of your model, or anywhere close.

Woo furry!
And yes, cholden's right, the eye area is human. Try bringing back the brow and forehead and smooth it all out, only humans and apes have jutting brows - see Lemur (http://www.wallpaperbase.com/wallpapers/animals/lemur/lemur_5.jpg) or cat (http://www.colloquial.com/cats/tor_profile_chair.jpg).
What are you using for reference? I love the swept back ears.
