as much as i love arsh and mops work. i couldnt bring myself to make a penis/stomachmouth hybrid. so i made this instead:
http://img63.imageshack.us/img63/8894/picsnotbs3kl.jpg
Not bad there, almighty_gir ... my main crits right now is even though she's meant to be female, her face and proportions are not very female.
The breasts are fine proportion-wise (although modelling nipples = why?), but she needs more hip shape on her. Also in that area, the pants look really boring. Big belt buckle, pouches, braces, belts, anything there to break up the boredom. It's a big flat area right now, and that needs rectifying.
Also something that's stopping her looking feminine is the face - mainly in the profile. The jaw is jutting out too much and seems too sharp. Moving the jaw back will also result in the lower lip going further back, and faces look more feminine when the upper lip is slightly further out than the lower lip.
Likewise I'd soften the shape of the nose and angle it up a little.
That said the mesh seems to be pretty good, just go over it and tweak to get more interesting and pleasing shapes - right now she's looking very rigid and tubular.
Keep it up /images/graemlins/smile.gif

nipples = why not? hahaha
ok, ill go about editing it some now =] thanks for the pointers MoP. modeling females is always hard for me (despite the fact i spend so long looking at them every day).

Glad you like it, Ghost. It was just meant to be some quick practice, but I guess it's now a full blown WIP. A search for Froud just returns a bunch of long-dead fansites, so I'm not sure what direction you want me to take it in.
Awesome concept, Mop! I like your color palette too.

i made a self portrait about 2 years ago, it was my first attemt at a human head. i opened it back up recently and noticed it looked nothing like me. mostly cause i used the photos of my face in an orthagraphic view so i was modeling the perpective. i went back and changed the topology and tweeked it up. before i wanted to animate the face so i tried to model in every wrinkle of my face. now i would just blend displacement maps. here is the new head, not exactly what i look like, but much closer. someone that knows me let me know if anything is way off.

http://www.arshlevon.com/images/forumpics/SP_pic.jpg
Seems accurate to me. The areas I'd have another look at are maybe giving the area above the nostrils a little more volume (maybe it's the lighting on the reference image but it looks like you have wider nostrils)... also a tiny bit more volume in the cheeks down to the jawline would probably work too. You handsome devil.

The eyes need to be a bit lower, thus adding more volume to the 'meat flap' under the eyebrows, otherwise pretty good likelyness.

You have a crease that breakes up your cheak on you in real life. The tip of your nose is smaller in real life as well. The area around your mouth pushes out a bit more in real life too. Lastly your chin has a softer change from pushing in to going out in real life.
Thats my nit pick.

thanks for the crits guys, i made some changes, i changed face topology around the cheek and chin to better represent my facial anatomy, i think they also address TGZ crits. i modeled a basic chest area, still trying to get the topology a little nicer. i should probably start my own thread with this, i had no idea i would be working on it so much, i just cant stop, and i have nothing else to do.

working on my texturing (and finishing off this model in general)
lemme know what you think /images/graemlins/smile.gif
Hey almighty_gir, that looks like a good start, but I hope you don't mind, I did a paintover to illustrate some crits and pointers I'd recommend:
http://www.spearmint.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/gir_paint1.jpg
For a start, her eyes are too small and too close together - this is a model problem, not a texture problem though. Take a look at some more reference, you'll see there shouldn't be so much room on either side of the head after the eyes. They look very squashed, so I moved them outwards - maybe they could be a little bigger too, to enhance the femininity.
My paintover still looks a little manly, it'd probably get further from that if you decreased the size of the chin, and made the lips and eyes slightly bigger.
It looks like you've layed a base colour down then started using dodge/burn to describe shading... I'd recommend against this method, since it leads to boring-looking flesh tones. Either that, or you're picking the same colour and just adjusting the brightness, not the hue or saturation. This will also tend to have the same effect.
Pick a base colour, then for different areas pick different hues and saturations to paint shading with - more yellow and bright for the forehead, more red and saturated for the nose and cheeks, maybe slightly toward blue or green for the jaw area. Also, with human flesh, saturation tends to increase in shadows because of reflected light of a similar colour bouncing into the shade. So areas like under the jaw and under the nose should be darker, but at the same time more saturated. Don't overdo it, though, or these areas will become focal points and you don't want that to happen.
Also, the lips you've painted so far are unlike any human lips I've ever seen... even with lipstick you rarely get that shade of red, and certainly not as sharp edges. You should probably smooth out areas more.
In general you need a lot darker darks... your texture right now is overall very bright and uniform, work some darker detail in (like around the eyes, lips and nose - contrast here will help the focal points pop out more).
I know it's early WIP but I just wanted to get all that said so you know what to aim for. I've been texturing a lot of female low-poly heads for work recently, and I've had to cover a lot of this stuff myself, and believe me, it really enhances the believability and makes the girls look good /images/graemlins/smile.gif
So yeah, grab more reference, don't be afraid to use more contrast, and pick a much wider range of hues and saturations.
Hope that helps! Keep it up! /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Soul: This is what I found on the CA forums:
"To change pressure you need to go to Edit > Preferences > Brush Tracking. Other than that it sounds like you need to go into the actual Control Panel for your tablet." You could look in there for anything to activate pressure sensitivity.
MoP: Great crits! Stuff like that always make me all fuzzy inside combined with strange and exciting feelings for Polycount.

Very Appleseed / silent mobius /images/graemlins/wink.gif I'm loving the colours, very appealing. In all it's a great concept and I can see a fine model being made during a production process.
I'd suggest drawing all the way down to the feet next time though, because reading the pose loses some of it's dramatic impact without feet.

I started from a deformed sphere and got a deformed monster blob with a nose.
Got another one, yet again, started from basic shapes:

Hell yea, I just thought it would be a good idea to post my first and get some helpful tips and stuff. I know these things are just a bunch of revolting blobs ;p. Just getting into zbrush today, trying to get used to the interface and tools. I don't know how you guys do it for a living.

I think this one is worth pimping:

Nice layout, cheap.
Just keep in mind that if you ever work with normalmaps, it is better to sacrifice some space to have less seams, as they are almost impossible to hide properly with a normalmap.

Hi everyone,
I decided I would create a low poly character with a hand held such as the Nintendo DS or PSP in mind. He weighs in at 440 triangles and has a 128x128 map. I plan to recreate his stage and another fighter with the same limits of map size and poly count.
Critiques or comments are very welcome. Thanks

That is a cool style on that boxer, but you might want to change the zipper line on the front of the pants because right now it is kind of uhhh... "suspect".
Dudley! Neat little model, Goemon. Where's his 6-tri rose? : )

it's nearly 2am, and for some reason that comment had more weight for me than most everything I've seen from you on these boards -- probably the most positive remark I've seen you make about your work and that's a good thing, since I know how hard it is to be happy with your own progress. The other thought I had was it made me think of biscuits. By the time I'd stopped digging in the cupboard, the goblins that live in my shoes had done a bit of a quick visual aid for you /images/graemlins/crazy.gif
http://server2.uploadit.org/files/jistyles-cheap_paintover.jpg
progress is:
-base
-block in volumes
-pay attention to sharp edging, and specular, also introduce some greater ranges of colour fidelity (wanky talk for make it look interesting and VIBRANT DARLING)
-paint in some sub details (splat some overlays if you feel like it, but make sure you're still painting with the overlays using the stamp tool instead of blindly laying them down in layers). Pull out hero details and erase others you don't want.
Like I said, quick job, but hopefully should illustrate the point.

As an addendum to that, here are some thoughs I felt should be added.
http://www.planetquake.com/polycount/cottages/kman/images/temp/garg.jpg
Now, you did a good job about picking out the hard and soft muscles as individual chunks. Now if you scale your image down as if you were looking from a distance you'll be seeing lots of light and dark spots all over the body. You'd want to go in afterwards, or even keep it in mind before on how the model would usually be lit from the top. With that in mind you wouldn't want to have many dark darks on parts that are facing upward as even if it's in a recessed area, plenty of light is still going to be hitting it.
You can still describe the surface of the muscle by using lights and darks to create your contrast, but you wouldn't be using such a dark dark in those instances. The light would be hitting that part of the body and bouncing around to nearby parts. Doing this will also get your muscle groups to start blending into each other. Not even a gargoyle can survive with 0% body fat.

My friend asked for a snake-monster model. I'm afraid it might be too cliche, maybe I should go with legs. I'm thinking of adding some webbed hands (2 claws and a thumb?) and some web/hood action under the arms, don't know if that'll deform well....

Work on the way the face edgeloops 'flow' into the nose, as right now the nose doesn't seem to be really well connected to the head.
And the edgeloop that forms 'fold' that goes from the corner of the nose to the side of the mouth should better be elongated around the mouth too.
