  • News Handplane

    February 14, 2013 by Mark Dygert

    The first version of the normal map conversion tool Handplane has been released

    handplane is a new tool designed with the goal the of solving tangent space mismatch issues for everyone. handplane works by combining an object space normal map with a lowpoly model to create and engine specific tangent space map. This means that artists can continue using their existing baking software to create tangent space normal maps synced to the following engines:

    3dsmax
    Maya
    Unreal
    Source
    Unity”

    handplane3d.com

    You should also checkout the other videos that are on the site, they go over a lot of general knowledge about normal maps and shading which can be a pain in anyone’s side.

    “The more you know, the better your workflow”.

      Nice! Now if only somehow you guys could make this for all the studios out there using proprietary engines ;)

      We can as long as they are willing to give us some documentation. Developers are surprisingly protective of what might be the most mundane few lines of code in a game engine.. :)

      I use this thing every day! It is a life saver.

      soo, now we need to bake first an object space normal map and after that using handplane to convert the object space normal into a tangent space normal, right ?

      @s1dK: that´s exactly how it works :)
      great tool, just what I need!

      … but handplane doesn´t convert the object space normal map into a tangent space normal map; handplane uses the information stored in the object space normal map together with the h3d file to create the tangent space map.
