IGDA Seattle presents:
Greenlight: Valve’s Community Managed Steam Indie Portal
by Tom Bui
IGDA Seattle is proud to present Tom Bui from Valve to talk about Steam Greenlight, Valve’s crowd-sourced system for choosing new games.
Steam Greenlight is a new platform that enlists the community’s help in selecting some of the next games to be released on Steam. It allows developers and publishers to post information and media about their game in an effort to convince the community that the game should be released on Steam. Greenlight is designed to provide an incredible level of added exposure for new games and an opportunity to connect directly with potential customers and fans. Tom Bui is part of the team working on Steam Greenlight and will be filling you in on what we’ve learned since the launch and what updates are planned in the near future.
Tom Bui
Tom graduated from the University of California-Berkeley with a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science. Like most software engineers at the time, he decided to join an Internet startup and become a millionaire before turning 30. When that didn’t happen, and after the Internet bubble burst, he decided to forget all that web-based, e-commerce stuff and pursue his real dream: making video games. He joined Midway Games West (formerly, the original Atari). That studio shut down a few months later, so Tom moved on to Maxis where he worked on titles such as Darkspore, Spore, and The Sims 2 (and many of its expansion packs). Since joining Valve in 2010, Tom has worked on Team Fortress 2, Portal 2, Counter-Strike: Global Offensiev and parts of Steam including the Steam Workshop, Community, and Greenlight.

I love the whole GREENLIGHT idea, it's early but I think it has the potential to make indie games play in the same league than the publisher's games.
